Extract a PCB specification from Word, Excel and PowerPoint files

Preview Office documents attached to a PCB and read their values into the PCB specification, without leaving Luminovo.

Overview

Customers often send the PCB specification as a Word document or an Excel sheet rather than a PDF. Until now those files could only be downloaded and opened in Office, and the values had to be copied into the PCB specification by hand.

Word, Excel and PowerPoint files attached to a PCB now open directly in Luminovo, the same way PDFs always have, and you can read their values into the PCB specification with Extract specification. Both current and older Office formats are covered.

Where to find it

Open a PCB assembly and go to the Files tab. Any Word, Excel or PowerPoint document attached there shows a preview in the file viewer, next to the existing PDF preview.

Prerequisites

  • The assembly type is PCB or PCBA. The PCB specification tab is only available for those types – for a System or Box build assembly it is not shown. You can change the assembly type in your project settings.

  • The document is attached to the PCB, as a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file.

There is nothing else to set up – the preview and extraction work on attached Office files out of the box.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Open the PCB assembly and go to the Files tab.

  2. Click the Word, Excel or PowerPoint document you want to work with. It opens in the file viewer, so you can read it without leaving Luminovo.

  3. Click Extract specification. Luminovo reads the values from the document into the PCB specification.

  4. Review the extracted values in the PCB specification and adjust anything that needs correcting before you continue.

ℹ️ Extract specification also works on PDF files, exactly as before. The change here is that Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents are now supported as well.
