In addition to standard BOM imports, we also support a hierarchical BOM format with multiple levels (currently in beta). While this format follows our usual BOM guidelines, there are a few additional requirements specific to multi-level BOMs. Before importing, please ensure that your multi-level BOM meets all necessary criteria:
The BOM must not be longer than 3000 lines
The levels must be in the format 1, 2, 3 etc. The highest level is expected to come first.
Below is a simplified example of a multi-level BOM in the format we are able to process:
Import a multi level BOM
For the import you can simply follow the same steps as for the usual BOM import. When we recognize the level format in 1, 2, 3 etc., we will automatically assign the column tag "level". This tag is used to uniquely identify and reference levels in the multi-level assembly. It can only be assigned once. You can remove the "level" tag to process the BOM as single-level BOM instead.
Navigation
After a successful import, you’ll be taken directly to the success screen, where you can review missing part options and resolve any clarification needs. A top-level assembly will be created automatically, and you’ll be guided to the first level of your multi-level BOM. The "Subassemblies" table will display the next level, including subassemblies, CPNs with their revisions, assembly quantities, and status for reference.
The status indicator will highlight where action is required, such as for a missing subassembly level or a duplicate CPN. You can click on the relevant subassembly to view these types of warnings:
To navigate between levels or subassemblies, use the assembly structure in the top-left corner and click on the subassembly you’d like to access:
You can also see the selected assembly on top and click on the three dots to navigate back to another level:
Edit options
In case you want to adjust the multi level BOM you can click the assembly menu and go to "Edit assembly".
You will be guided to an edit mode where you can assign a new parent assembly to adjust the assembly level, change the assembly name, IPN, its quantity or add notes. Make sure to save your changes accordingly. You will directly see any changes afterwards.
We hope this guide helps you get started with importing your first multi-level BOMs. If you have any questions or feedback, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help and always eager to improve!
